Since the late 1920’s it has been the goal of W.R. Vernon Produce Company to provide the freshest, highest quality fruits and vegetables at a competitive price. Our focus on quality, superior customer service and our attention to detail has not wavered from the first day we opened our doors. As we enter our 84th year in business, our third and fourth generation leadership continues to instill the same values. We look forward to a bright future that will allow us to continue to serve our customers, remain active in our community and serve as a role model to our industry. OUR HISTORY In the late 1920’s, William Roy Vernon would bring apples from his hometown in Carroll County Virginia to North Carolina to sell to local produce stands. Demand for his products and services were soon strong enough to open his own produce stand in Winston-Salem. In 1931, he converted his home on the corner of Cherry and 7th streets to W.R. Vernon Produce Company. He rented out rooms in the house to veterans coming back from the war to assist in paying expenses. It wasn’t long before the business was large enough that W.R. Vernon was able to bring in...

Over the last 20 years our industry has seen the demand for organic fruits and vegetables increase substantially. In response to this demand W.R. Vernon Produce has worked to align ourselves with top quality organic producers. We have worked with our customers to increase awareness as well as help educate them about organics, thus increasing demand for organic products both in food service and retail environments. W.R. Vernon is proud of the fact that we are QAI certified to handle organic fruits and vegetables. We have an entire cooler area dedicated to the storage and handling of only organic products. We offer a complete selection of high quality organic produce available in bulk as well as pre-packaged. Year round we are able to offer in excess of approximately 125 seasonal organic items. These products include but are not limited to leaf items, tomatoes, potatoes, citrus, berries and fresh herbs. During the season, we can often supply our customers with “local organics”, supporting the local farmers and helping them market and deliver their products. W.R. Vernon Produce will continue to increase our organic offerings. We will strive to forge new relationships with responsible organic farmers in order to...
Here at W.R. Vernon Produce we have been supporting local family farms since we opened the doors. That is how we got our start. It is more than simply supporting a local farmer because they are local. It is and always has been the right thing to do. Most customers like to know where their food comes from and who is producing it. Realistically speaking, local food production can be thought of in concentric circles that begin with growing food at home. The next circle might be food grown in your immediate community, then county, state and region. If products are not available locally or regionally, look for items produced in the United States. Remember, local means as close to home as possible. Buying local helps support a more sustainable food system because true sustainability exceeds the methods used in food production and includes every step that brings food from farm to table. Buying local or seasonal produce has many advantages; here are a few of the biggest and most obvious reasons to “Keep It Local” when possible. Minimize the “food miles” and help reduce the carbon footprint for that particular item. Freshness. Food that travels less is...
Cardboard Recycling: A byproduct of our recycling operation yields nearly 120 tons of cardboard packaging that is recycled each year. This converts to an annual savings of approximately 2040 trees. As our recycling efforts and process continue to improve we are forecasting a 5% increase per year in the amount of packaging that we are able to recycle. Fork Lifts and Pallet Jacks: W.R. Vernon Produce has converted all of our warehouse lifting equipment to electric in an effort to minimize our carbon footprint. New Construction: Beginning with our last addition we have started to use the latest insulation technology. Not only does it keep our cooler temperatures more constant, it allows us to run our cooling units less, which is a savings in the amount of electricity we...

The existence of a safe, reliable and traceable food supply chain is paramount to our industry. W.R. Vernon Produce Company is committed to the highest standards of quality and food safety. We have a fully documented food safety program audited annually by NSF International which covers our entire process from receiving and storage to shipment. Our program includes hazard analysis, personal hygiene, facility and truck sanitation and maintenance, crisis management, product recall plans and security. To help safeguard our products as well as our customers, here’s what we are doing in our facilities: Maintaining the Cold Chain: The cold chain is monitored from the beginning by checking all inbound trucks for proper temperatures, both in the trailers as well as the pulp temperatures of the product. USDA Receiving Standards: In addition to checking temperature, our USDA trained and certified Quality Assurance Staff also inspects all incoming product for quality, tampering and pest control. We also inspect our inventory on a regular basis to ensure freshness, date rotation and food security. Proper Storage Practices: Since products often require different temperature, humidity and ethylene controlled environments for storage, our facilities have been modified accordingly. These modifications also aid in assuring complete...
